Study in Takadanobaba, one of Tokyo’s busiest student district
March 17, 2025  |  By Amélie Marie Nishizawa

Takadanobaba is a well-loved student district that offers a dynamic, fun environment for international students. With plenty of language schools available and nearby vocational school campuses for those looking to further their education, this neighborhood caters to a diverse range of academic pursuits. Plus, you’re just one station away from Waseda University, which ranks among the top 12% of universities in the QS World University Ranking 2025.

Located in Shinjuku Ward

Situated in the heart of Tokyo, Takadanobaba is part of Shinjuku Ward and just two stations from the bustling Shinjuku Station. The area benefits from a large foreign community, meaning local city services are well-prepared to assist non-Japanese speakers. You’ll find support in both easy Japanese and several foreign languages. Additionally, the nearby Foreign Residents Support Center (FRESC) is ready to help with everyday challenges, employment, and immigration matters.

A Breeze For Commutes

Takadanobaba Station serves as a hub for three excellent commute lines: the circle loop Yamanote Line, the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, and the Seibu Shinjuku Line. Each line offers its own advantages. While the Yamanote Line provides unmatched convenience to central Tokyo—albeit at a higher rent—the Tozai and Seibu Shinjuku lines connect you to Tokyo’s western residential areas, where rent tends to be more affordable. No matter which line you choose, you’ll have easy access to various parts of Tokyo, making it convenient not only for your studies but also for part-time work and social networking.

Vibrant Student Nightlife

What’s a study abroad experience without some fun evening outings? In Takadanobaba, the evenings come alive with groups of students hanging out at local izakayas, bars, and restaurants. Right next to the station is the Box Box Mall—a massive complex featuring cafes, shops, game centers, and even an evening fitness gym. You’re also within easy reach of Shinokubo, Tokyo’s vibrant Korean district, where you can explore themed cafes and spots dedicated to popular K-pop bands.

Moderately affordable rents

For students willing to take a brisk 10-15 minute walk from the station, renting an apartment in Takadanobaba can be a cost-effective choice compared to suburbs that are a 20-25 minute commute away. Rent in Tokyo depends on various factors, including building age (new, moderately old or very old), building type (mansion or apartment style) and room size (studio versus larger spaces). This diversity means you can find a place that fits both your budget and lifestyle preferences. According to our average rent in Tokyo article on GaijinPot Blog, a 1R apartment costs about ¥79,000 per month and a quick search on GaijinPot Apartments shows properties available for rent as low as ¥62,000 before utilities.

You should also be able to find many sharehouses that offer the convenience of not having to care about utility contracts and extra contracting fees.
