Testimonials
When I was first introduced to Japan in high school, through Japanese media like the Studio Gibli animated films and video games, I was struck by the complexity and creativity of a country so different from my birthplace in the United States of America. In 2020, when the world was struggling with Coronavirus, I decided to start studying Japanese using language apps, and I was fascinated by the complexity and history of the language. When COVID-19 restrictions lifted in 2022, I decided to study abroad in Japan at the Yokohama International Education Academy (YIEA) on a year and a half program. Located in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai, the area was an excellent introduction to Japan; Yokohama is a beautiful and historical port city, and it’s only a 40-minute train ride away from Tokyo. At YIEA, I worked my way up through the classes, from Beginner 2 all the way to Advanced 2, making friends from all around the world. Even though we were all very different, I bonded with my classmates over our shared language studies and interest in Japanese culture. In class, we learned not just Japanese grammar and vocabulary, but also each other’s cultures. The teachers at YIEA were very supportive in my goals to work in Japan. There are elective classes about business Japanese and Japanese culture, as well as information sessions about continuing education, job hunting, and cultural exchange events. I also received support on writing my resume and CV in Japanese, and took interview practice lessons. Now, I’m taking the next step in my Japan journey as I apply for jobs as a video game composer and sound designer. Thanks to YIEA’s support, I’m confident that I’m prepared to work here. For those considering studying abroad in Japan or applying to YIEA, remember that if you trust in your ability to learn and take a leap, you can make it happen! Show More
