Do Japanese Language Schools Offer Support In English?
January 7, 2025  |  By Amélie Marie Nishizawa

The ability to communicate with your Japanese language school is key for a smooth stay—though some students seek the full immersion experience! Most schools try to provide linguistic support in English and other languages, but it may not be available at all times.

Language support when facing the school administration

Schools usually hire administrators that have studied foreign languages and/or lived abroad, to ensure they can communicate with students and relate to their daily life matters. However, English and other languages speaking staff may not always be present on school grounds. Cultural differences and their actual speaking abilities can lead to misunderstandings.

If you have a hard time communicating with your school, our team is always here to help troubleshoot the situation. Please reach out to us before making any rash decisions.

Language support in class with your teachers

Classes are held in Japanese and schools will not make any accommodations. Since they welcome students from many countries, they cannot provide linguistic support. This is why studying in school can be so effective, thanks to a language bath where both instructions and contents are done in Japanese. Your teachers are trained to help you understand with gestures, images, and situational teachings, so don’t worry!

You can approach your teachers and school staff with any questions you have, and some may be able to provide you with some English explanations. Course materials may provide some translations and explanations in English, but it’s best to plan for a dictionary and learning apps.
