Japanese language schools offer classes starting from the beginner level. However, the Immigration Agency of Japan may require proof of prior language studies, with specific requirements that can vary from one intake period to the next. Recently, Immigration officers have been asking applicants to provide supporting evidence of basic knowledge of Japanese.
Therefore, if you have no prior experience studying Japanese, we first recommend self-studying using free online resources such as websites, apps and textbooks. Keep track of time spent on practice and of your progress to provide an accurate account of your studies.
Self-study can be sufficient in some cases, though sometimes if you have no prior formal experience, we may suggest that you enroll in courses that offer recognized certificates.
The 150h Japanese Language Certificate
When the admissions team determines that you require a certificate, you will need to provide either a JLPT N5 certificate of passing or the equivalent of 150 hours of Japanese classes. School and university courses, tutoring and private lessons all count towards the total requirement of 150 hours.
Therefore, you can either aim for a 150-hour course certificate or the accumulation of formal studies—the aforementioned university courses, tutoring and private lessons—amounting to roughly 150 hours.
Our partnered schools may suggest enrolling in their short-term program before starting your long-term course. Even if the short-term course does not begin before you submit your visa application to the Immigration Bureau, the enrollment certificate will still be valuable.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the language requirements for a student visa, please do not hesitate to contact our team.
