There are no medical-based restrictions for studying in Japan, so if you have a medical condition, it shouldn’t stop you from applying. If you need support from your Japanese language school, inform them as early as possible. Consult your medical provider about continuing treatment in Japan and familiarize yourself with the rules for importing medication for the initial few months.
Can I Apply If I Have a Medical Condition?
Yes, you can still apply to Japan for language studies even if you have a medical condition. We respect your privacy, so it’s your choice to disclose your condition. We won’t ask for unnecessary information, but we want to ensure that you can come to Japan safely and that studying there won’t harm your health or current treatment.
Depending on your condition, some schools may be more suitable for you in terms of available support. It’s important to inform your coordinator as early as possible so they can advise you on potential schools and consult the admission team about possible accommodations.
You may need to provide a certificate or letter from your medical provider confirming that you are fit to travel and study overseas. Some schools require an initial medical intake form or certificate from all applicants at the time of application.
Bringing Medication to Japan
If you are currently undergoing a specific treatment and need to bring your medication to Japan, you may need to apply for an import certificate called 輸入確認書 (yunyu kakunin sho) depending on the type and amount of medication. If the medication is a controlled drug or if the quantity exceeds a month’s supply, you will need to obtain this certificate.
The application should be submitted to the Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare closest to your airport of arrival at least two weeks before your flight. This means you must have your flight booked to start the application process.
For more detailed information and guidance, visit the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare website and consult the Q&A section for those importing medicines into Japan. There, you’ll find the relevant forms to fill out.
Note: If your medication is classified as a narcotic in Japan, you will need to obtain advanced permission from the Narcotics Control Department at the Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare.
